Holy Basil / Tulsi

Traditional uses

Holy basil is also known as tulsi, which means “the incomparable one.”

Considered as sacred in the Hindu faith, most traditional homes and temples in India have at least one tulsi plant. It has been traditionally used to to purify the air, repel mosquitoes, and as a universal remedy for colds, headaches, stomach problems, and malaria.

Health Benefits

Holy basil can be used to treat wounds and fight infections, as it has antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic (painkiller) properties.
Holy basil can help lower blood sugar and cholesterol and prevent symptoms of diabetes.
It can protect from the effects of radiation, and provide some benefits to brain cells and the heart.
Holy Basil is considered an adaptogen. This means that it can help your body deal with stress and anxiety, and enhance physical performance.

How to use it

It is often used in cooking, but is more spicy and bitter than other kinds of basil.

It can be taken in capsule form, or as a tincture or essential oil, and it tastes amazing (but strong) in an herbal tea infusion, either on its own or blended with other herbs.
